It appears for logged-in adult users, in supported languages — Italian included. AI Overview is in Italy since March 2025. The question is whether it cites you.

Since it went live, who sees it and who doesn't, why it sometimes doesn't appear and what changes for clicks on Italian sites — with proof of one of our projects cited in the overview with 3 links out of 8.

AI Overview has been available in Italy since 26 March 2025, when Google extended it to Europe along with eight other countries. It is visible to adult users who are signed in to Google, in supported languages — Italian included. Every date and requirement mentioned in this guide links back to the official announcement.

In summary

What is an AI Overview: it is the response generated by artificial intelligence that Google displays above search results, «accompanied by clearly visible links to explore the topic further». We explained its meaning and how it works in detail in the Google AI Overview guide; here we answer specific questions about Italy.

  • It has been active in Italy since 26 March 2025, as part of the European rollout announced by Google, which also includes Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
  • It is visible to adult users who are signed in to Google Search, in supported languages — Italian included.
  • It does not appear on all searches: it is Google that decides for which queries to generate it, and this explains most of the «it's not working for me» reports.
  • For Italian websites, click distribution changes: those cited within the overview gain visibility, while those who only appear below it suffer the consequences.

Since when has AI Overview been active in Italy?

The official date is March 26, 2025: on that day Google published the announcement «AI Overview arrives in Italy too» (signed by Hema Budaraju, Senior Director, Product Management, Search), stating: «Today, we are extending the convenience of AI Overviews to Europe, including Italy».

The European wave of March 2025 includes, in addition to Italy:

  • Austria
  • Belgium (initially in English only)
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Switzerland

The feature is available «when [users] search in any of the supported languages, including Italian». So it is not just a matter of where you are: country, search language and account requirements all matter.

How do you activate AI Overview (and why does it sometimes not appear)?

There is no switch to press: if you meet the requirements declared by Google, AI Overview appears on its own when the engine decides to generate it. The requirements are three:

01

Legal age

Age requirement

The announcement reserves the feature for «users [...] who have reached the legal age».

02

Signed in

Active Google account

You must have «signed in to Google Search»: in incognito mode or without login the overview may not appear.

03

Supported language

Italian included

The search must be performed «in any of the supported languages», including Italian.

What if the requirements are met but the overview doesn't appear? It's normal behaviour: not all searches trigger it. It's Google that decides for which queries to generate an AI response — in our experience it appears mostly on informational and comparative questions, much less on dry brand searches or navigation queries. «AI Overview is not working» almost always simply means «for this query Google does not generate it».

What changes for Italian websites?

Since March 2025, even in Italy there is a position worth more than first place: inside the answer. When the overview appears, the user receives the summary before even seeing the traditional results — and this reshapes the distribution of clicks in two opposite ways.

Those who are cited among the sources of the overview gain a new visibility, above everyone else. Those who instead remain only below the overview may keep their organic position and lose clicks anyway: this is the phenomenon of GEO displacement — stable position, declining CTR, because the answer arrives before your link. If in Search Console you see stable impressions and falling clicks on informational queries, this is the first suspect to investigate.

The operational consequence: for queries that trigger the overview, the goal is no longer just to rank — it is to be the source the AI chooses to cite. And that is a matter of content structure, not luck.

Can an Italian website really be cited? Our test

Yes, and we say this with our own data, not with theory. On one of our projects — medichub.it, a new domain with zero link building — we verified on July 3, 2026 that for the query «ai integrated dentist management software» the site was cited as the second result inside the AI Overview, with 3 out of 8 links in the overview pointing to its pages, in addition to organic position 1 for the same query.

Two honest clarifications. First: the citation cannot be guaranteed — no one controls what the AI chooses to cite, and whoever promises you otherwise is selling smoke. However, content can be structured to maximise the probability: a direct answer at the opening, data with sources, FAQs, clear entities. Second: the result above is an achieved and documented outcome, not a promise. You can find the step-by-step method to check whether your site is already cited in the guide on how to find out if your site is cited in AI Overviews.

Frequently Asked Questions about AI Overview in Italy

Since March 26, 2025, the date of the official announcement in which Google extended AI Overview to Europe. The rollout also includes Austria, Belgium (initially in English only), Germany, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, in the supported languages — Italian included.

There is nothing to activate manually: it appears on its own if you are of legal age, are signed in to Google Search and search in a supported language. It is then up to Google to decide for which queries to generate the AI answer.

The most common reasons: you are not signed in to Google (in incognito mode it may not appear), or the query you are trying simply does not trigger the overview — not all searches generate it, and the choice is Google's. In our experience it appears mostly on informational and comparative questions.

It is a summary generated by artificial intelligence, and Google itself accompanies it «with clearly visible links to explore the topic further»: the correct way to use it is as a starting point, verifying the cited sources. Like any generative response, it can oversimplify or be wrong — which makes it even more important, for publishers, to be among the sources the AI cites.

The most reliable method is to manually search your main keywords on Google and check the overview sources when it appears — this is how we documented the citations for our project. The step-by-step process is in the guide on how to find out if your site is cited.
